..carl sagan..
06.28.04 (8:17 am)   [edit]
One of my favourite authors is Carl Sagan. The man made science accessible to those of us not in the science world. The humor with which he presented his discipline made learning about our universe fun and interesting.

I've read Mr. Sagan's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors about a billion times. I never tire of it. For those of you that are not familiar with the book this is a brief summary:

Basically the book is a very comfortable read about evolution and what keeps humans NOT so different from other species within the animal kingdom.

Which brings me to today. What really makes humans truly superior in our own minds. I mean clearly we're physically not able to be thrown into the wilderness, naked sans technology and survive it comfortably.

We rely on technology to the point that it seems almost imposible to live without it. What exactly has technology brought us?

The ability to program a computer to launch a missile at an unseen enemy miles away?

I don't think technology has enabled us to grow closer as a global community. I don't think anyone really knows what community means anymore.

It really saddens me. I live in a fairly small city and to some extent I do find it nicer to live here. When I walk around people still greet you good morning. People whose stores I frequent wave as I walk by.

That kinda thing really makes my day.

The next time you walk past someone......smile at least. You never know whose day you might make!

..voting..
06.24.04 (9:34 am)   [edit]
The impending U.S. elections could possibly be one of the most important of the past 2 decades. The global political climate is dependant on who takes the seat in November.

I personally wish I could vote, but I'm Dutch.....which brings me to my point. Really, I did have one.

I'm Dutch but was born in the Philippines and in my 29 years have lived in a different country almost every 3-4 years. I've never been eligible to vote anywhere. So this is the thing, why are people so apathetic about voting?

Perhaps you take it for granted. I don't want to bash Americans or their culture but generally I find that a large majority of the younger generation just take what they have for granted.

Surrounded by excess and seemingly they have come to expect. Expect without giving. I hate walking by 11 year olds with cell phones. I abhor the fact that as a general rule the younger generation has no clue about what's happening in the rest of the world.

I talked to an American with whom I was discussing the US's decision to go to war and he promptly told me I should be grateful that the Americans are standing up for the rest of the world.

What exactly are you standing up for when a majority of your populace is so ambivalent about the vote and feel they can't make a difference?

I don't know...it's the same idea of you don't know what you have till it's gone ( or in my case, never had it).

You are given the priveledge to vote. Don't throw it away.
